With CNY past its fall foliage peak, Finger Lakes, Catskills show off their color
ALBANY — While most of the dazzling color from the fall foliage display in Central New York has been raked up and is awaiting collection by the curb, there remain some pockets of color, according to observers with the Empire State Development Division of Tourism’s I LOVE NY Fall Foliage program.
Oneida County spotters in Utica note significant leaf droppage in the area and predict past-peak foliage for the weekend, with more than 90% color change and average-to-bright shades of yellow, red, and orange.
Those looking for some nearby color may find some brilliant pockets of color in and around the Cazenovia area of Madison County, with 95% color change and very brilliant red and orange leaves.
Those who don’t mind a drive to check out the final foliage shows of the season will find peak foliage in the Finger Lakes area, particularly in Cortland County around Cortland, with 75% change and very brilliant red, orange, and yellow leaves.
Seneca County spotters in Seneca Falls anticipate peak foliage this weekend, with 75% color change and bright, very brilliant leaves.
In Monroe County, spotters reporting from Greece expect peak and past-peak foliage this weekend with nearly complete leaf change and vivid to brilliant shades of red and orange, along with some yellow, green, and brown leaves, and significant droppage.
Onondaga County foliage watchers report just-past-peak foliage in Syracuse with more than 50% color change and muted yellow leaves dotting the landscape.
In the Catskills, Greene County foliage will be just-past-peak in the town of Catskill with nearly complete leaf change and yellow and orange leaves of average brilliance, along with touches of red. Foliage at Belleayre Mountain Ski Area in Highmount will also be past-peak, with complete leaf change and bright orange and yellow leaves. Other reporting stations in the region are now past-peak.
In the Greater Niagara region, peak and past-peak conditions are expected in Niagara County around Lewiston, where spotters are predicting nearly complete leaf change and very brilliant yellow, orange, and red leaves. Niagara Falls foliage will be past peak, with a muted-to-average fall colors and significant leaf droppage. In Erie County, spotters in Buffalo expect leaves to be past-peak by the weekend, with 75% color change and a very bright mix of fall colors in and north of the city. Springville spotters expect leaves to be past-peak but still beautiful this weekend, with brilliant red and orange leaves.
