Winter storm expected to clear out on Wednesday
Winter may be nearing its end, but not before at least one more snowstorm will sock the region — with nearly a foot of snow blanketing the region possible before the storm clears out on Wednesday, predicts the National Weather Service.
The snowfall will contend with above-freezing temperatures, meaning a mix of rain and melting throughout the storm, said Meteorologist Joanne LaBounty with the National Weather Service’s Binghamton office. The office has issued a winter storm warning which will remain in effect through 8 a.m. Wednesday.
The event begins today (Monday), LaBounty said, with snow mixed with rain before transitioning to just snow late Monday. “When people wake up on Tuesday, they will wake up to three to four inches of snow,” LaBounty stated.
Temperatures will rise back into the 30s today, Tuesday, March 14, and LaBounty said there will be another mix of snow and rain throughout the morning and into the afternoon. The higher temperatures and rain will help clear the roadways, she noted.
There will be another two to three inches of accumulation of snow during the day on Tuesday, she said, and then another two inches overnight from Tuesday into Wednesday. Temperatures will only dip into the 20s Tuesday night.
“Once the storm passes by on Wednesday, it will get pretty breezy, but not blizzard like,” LaBounty stated. Wind gusts of up to 30 mph are expected on Wednesday.
LaBounty said the snowstorm is the result of a low pressure system strengthening on Monday off the coast of the Carolinas, which will then move up along the coast to New England by Tuesday.
