Virtual hunger walk provides real help for local folks in need

Although COVID-19 concerns made it impossible to hold the Rome Area Hunger Walk in person last year, a virtual walk in October 2020 is providing nourishing relief to many suffering from hunger and food insecurity.

Andrea Radesi, chairperson of the event, said that the Hunger Walk committee is grateful for the support of area individuals, churches, and businesses which included monetary donations and canned goods. “We were overwhelmed with the generosity amid the pandemic,” Radesi said. Due to that generosity, $1,168 checks were each distributed to the Bill Gavin Food Pantry at St Joseph’s Church Lee Center; the Rome Rescue Mission; the Rome Salvation Army; In Mission of the Christ Child at St Peter’s Rome, and Rome Catholic Charities. A gift to the Bread of Life Community Center through the CNY Food Bank, $500 to the Foothills Rural Community Ministry in Holland Patent and $500 to the Rome Alliance for Education were also allotted.

Anyone wishing to donate can send a check made payable to the First Presbyterian Church, 108 W. Court St, Rome NY 13440 noting “RAHW” in the memo line. People may also call the church office at 315-336-1380 to find out how to become involved. The 2021 Rome Area- Hunger Walk is set for Sunday, Oct. 17.
