VERONA — An investigation is continuing into a fatal two-car motor vehicle crash on state Route 31 near Kelly Avenue, according to the Oneida County Sheriff’s Office.

Around 5:30 p.m. on Wednesday, Nov. 9, Frederick Rissman, 73, of Verona was driving a 2012 Dodge Avenger and was attempting to turn eastbound onto state Route 31 from Kelly Avenue.

Deputies said Rissman had two passengers inside the vehicle — 55-year-old Jean Rissman of Verona, who was sitting in the front passenger seat, and Daniel Perez, 26, of Elmhurst, who was sitting in the rear of the vehicle.

“Rissman’s vehicle failed to yield the right of way to a 2011 Chevy Silverado being operated by Gary Cronk, 65, of Oneida, who was traveling westbound on Route 31. Cronk was treated at the scene by the Verona Fire Department…,” notes a statement from the sheriff’s office.

Frederick Rissman was pronounced dead at the scene, deputies said.

Jean Rissman was transported via helicopter to SUNY Upstate Hospital in Syracuse with serious injuries. Perez was transported by Vineall ambulance to St. Elizabeth’s Hospital for his injuries that are not life threatening.

The Criminal Investigations Unit, the Forensic ID Unit are investigating the crash. The crash is being reconstructed.

Deputies were assisted on the scene by the New York State Police, Vineall Ambulance and the Verona Fire Department.
