VERONA — While St. Peter’s Lutheran Church, 4897 Old Oneida Road, will once again offer Drive-Thru Ashes for Ash Wednesday, Feb. 17, it won’t be business as usual.
Ashes will be offered between 6:30 and 9 a.m.,, but also 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. and -6:30 p.m. There will also be some adjustments to combat the spread of the coronavirus and keep everyone as safe as possible.
Ashes will be placed on foreheads using a cotton swab, and those placing the ashes will be wearing masks and face shields. Those coming to receive ashes are also required to wear a mask, although anyone who feels unwell is requested to remain home.
Anyone wearing a mask who would like ashes may follow the signs in the parking lot to receive a cross of ashes on their forehead and prayer without leaving the car.
Ashes are a symbol of human brokenness and the need for forgiveness and healing. Ash Wednesday is the first day of Lent, a Christian season of contemplation, reflection and repentance consisting of the 40 days minus Sundays leading up to Easter. St. Peter’s will also offer an online worship service that day on their YouTube channel and Facebook page.
