Utica School Board lauds student athletes
UTICA — The Utica City School District Board of Education saluted two sports teams and an individual star athlete Tuesday at their regular monthly meeting.
“We’re very excited to have some student athletes with us tonight and we’d like to recognize them for their success this season,” district Acting Superintendent Brian Nolan told the board and their audience.
He then introduced the Proctor High School varsity boys basketball team, varsity girls bowling team and Hector Perez, a track and field star heading to state competition.
The basketball team is the Tri-Valley League champions, Nolan said. They finished 7-1 in the division, 9-3 in the league and 13-10 overall, he said.
Head coach Mark Savage said it was an incredible year with the help of his fellow coaches, but their championship isn’t the pinnacle of their recent accomplishments.
“Winning the Tri-Valley League was the least thing they did this year,” Savage admitted. “Everywhere we go these kids get applauded, whether it’s other coaches, referees ... I couldn’t be more proud of them.”
Team Captain Todd Abraham said a highlight of the season was going up against Rome Free Academy in the playoffs. That game was a true adrenaline rush, he said.
“That’s what high school sports is all about - making memories,” Abraham said.
The girls varsity bowling team is also the Tri-Valley League champions, finishing their own season 13-1. Head Coach Amy Conte said last year when she took over there were only seven girls and three had never bowled before.
“I told the girls if they worked really hard they could get to sectionals by their senior year and they had two years to get there,” Conte recalled. “We made it a year early.”
Proctor junior Angela Ciccone has been on the team for five years. She said her favorite memory was also besting RFA.
“I have made a lot of great memories and met a lot of amazing people on this team,” Ciccone told the board and the audience.
Perez took the Tri-Valley League championship in the 55-meter, 300-meter and 4x200 relay events. As Section III Class A champion in the 55-meter, he also qualified for state competition, heading March 4 to that event in Staten Island.
Head Track and Field Coach Jerry Tine said it’s the fifth year in a row they have had a member of the team heading to the state competition and Perez is continuing a long-standing legacy of track and field excellence at the school.
Perez has some big goals, his coach added.
“His goal is to break the school record — he’s adamant about that — he’s been No. 1 or No. 2 in the 55 all year long,” Tine said.
