UTICA — A 44-year-old man has been charged with attempted murder for a non-fatal shooting on Oneida Street in Utica in December, according to the Utica Police Department.

Police said Sonny Breton, of Utica, shot a man in the lower back in the 1300 block of Oneida Street around 9:45 p.m. on Dec. 14. The victim underwent emergency surgery and survived their injuries.

Police said Breton was soon identified as the shooter and a case against him was presented to a grand jury. An indictment was filed against Breton, and a warrant was issued for his arrest.

On Wednesday, police said Breton was found in the town of Verona and he was taken into custody with assistance from the U.S. Marshal's Regional Fugitive Task Force.

Breton is charged with one count each of attempted second-degree murder, attempted first-degree assault, second-degree assault, second-degree possession of a weapon and criminal use of a firearm, police stated. He was arraigned in Oneida County Court and was sent to the county jail in lieu of bail. He is scheduled to reappear in court.
