WESTMORELAND — One man was hospitalized with severe burns after his pickup truck crashed on Route 5 and caught on fire Monday evening, according to law enforcement officials.

Sheriff’s deputies said Jack H. Pylman, 73, of Utica, was westbound at about 7:30 p.m. when his 1995 GMC Sierra pickup truck went off the north shoulder and crashed head-on into a utility pole. Deputies said they do not yet know what caused the pickup to veer off the roadway.

Authorities said the truck rolled over and immediately caught on fire.

Bystanders in the area rushed in and pulled Pylman from the vehicle.

He was taken to St. Elizabeth Medical Center in Utica and was then transferred to University Hospital in Syracuse. Authorities said he suffered severe burns to his upper torso and face and was last listed in critical condition.

The crash remains under investigation.
