WHITESTOWN — One of the Utica men sentenced to life in state prison this week for a fatal shooting is now accused of attacking a corrections officer at the Oneida County jail, according to the Oneida County Sheriff's Office.

Sheriff's deputies said Hakim Muhammad, 20, punched the officer several times in the head and face while inside the jail around 11:30 a.m. Wednesday. The officer was treated for their injuries at Oneida Health.

On Tuesday, Muhammad was sentenced in Oneida County Court to 25 years to life in state prison on a charge of second-degree murder for the May 2021 shooting death of Lemeke Pittman in Utica.

Authorities said the assault in the jail remains under investigation.
