Transformer fire leads to power outage south of Rome

ROME — Upwards of 1,000 homes and businesses were without power from south Rome to Westmoreland Friday afternoon due to a transformer fire on Martin Street, according to city and National Grid officials.
Rome Fire Department officials said they were dispatched to a transformer fire on Martin Street, near Mill and Anthony streets, at about 2:15 p.m. Friday. And National Grid reported up to 1,131 customers without power stretching down the Route 233 corridor from south Rome to just north of the Village of Westmoreland.
National Grid said power was expected to be restored by 4 p.m.
