Third man charged in Utica shootout incident

UTICA — A third person has been taken into custody as part of an ongoing shootout investigation in Utica from August, according to the Utica Police Department.

Police said Willie Linder, 36; Shakeal Hendricks, 30; and 29-year-old Jovan Mullenax, of Utica, were engaged in a shootout with another group of people near the 1400 block of Whitesboro Street around 8:15 p.m. Aug. 16. At the time of the reported shootout, many people were gathered in the area for a candlelight vigil for a different, unrelated shooting victim from earlier that week.

During the gunfire, police said a 12-year-old boy was struck in the face with a bullet, which became lodged in his jaw. He had to undergo emergency surgery at a local hospital. Police said Mullenax was also shot during the incident, though he refused to cooperate with investigators.

Following an extensive investigation, Linder and Hendricks were both taken into custody last week.

Mullenax was then located and taken into custody on Friday on one count each of first-degree assault and attempted first-degree assault, police said. He is scheduled to appear in Oneida County Court.
