A Utica teenager has been charged with weapons possession after law enforcement officials said he tried to flee on Saturday night, according to a report by local law enforcement officials.
Police said they attempted to stop 18-year-old Kaivon Hamell on his bicycle in the 1400 block of Miller St. at about 7:45 p.m. Saturday.
When the officers got out of their patrol vehicle, police said Hamell fled on foot down a driveway and through several backyards.
Officers gave chase and were able to catch Hamell on West Street.
Once he was in custody, police said they found the bicycle and a loaded .45-caliber handgun, both dropped during the chase.
Hamell is charged with one count each of second-degree possession of a weapon, criminal possession of a firearm, second-degree obstruction of a governmental administration and several vehicle and traffic violations, authorities stated. He is scheduled to appear in Utica City Court.
