Syracuse football adds Perkins as coach of safeties, rovers
SYRACUSE — The Syracuse University football team has added its 10th assistant coach to Dino Babers' staff for the 2023 season.
Darrell Perkins has been hired to coach the safeties and rovers in the Orange’s 3-3-5 scheme. The program confirmed the hiring on social media Friday afternoon.
“Coach Perkins has a long history of working with defensive backs and we’re excited for him to join our program,” Babers said in a news release. “His experience in the Northeast makes him an excellent fit for our program.”
Perkins replaces replacing Nick Monroe, who took a role as cornerbacks coach and co-defensive coordinator at the University of Minnesota.
Most recently, Perkins coached the defensive backs at UMass, where his unit ranked in the top-10 of the Football Bowl Subdivision in passing defense. The unit allowed 175 yards per game through the air.
Perkins was also the cornerbacks coach at Connecticut. He was hired in 2019 but had previously coached at the university in the same position from 2010 to 2013. In between his two stints with UConn, Perkins coached at Old Dominion (2014), Maryland (2015) and then Fordham (2016 to 2018).
“I’m excited and thankful for this opportunity,” Perkins said in the release. “I’m looking forward to getting to work in a program with the history and tradition that Syracuse has.”
Perkins guided a ninth-ranked defensive backs unit for Connecticut in 2012 as the defense overall finished first for total defense in the Big East.
In his first season, the Huskies tied for the fifth-best in interceptions at the Football Bowl Subdivision and were ranked 28th in pass efficiency defense. Connecticut shared first place in the Big East that year.
Perkins has also had coaching stints early in his career at Louisiana-Monroe, Charleston Southern, Ferris State and as a graduate assistant at Purdue. He played for Wyoming from 1985 to 1990 and was a two-year starter at running back. Current Syracuse Defensive Coordinator Rocky Long coached Perkins during his freshman season at Wyoming in 1985, according to the school's news release.
With Friday's announcement, Syracuse has replaced all five of the assistant coaches it lost this offseason.
