STEM shadowing day program seeks students, host locations
WHITESBORO — The Mohawk Valley Engineers Executive Council will host the 49th annual Project SITES shadowing day program from 11:30 a.m. until 4:30 p.m. Thursday, March 23 at Hart’s Hill Inn, 135 Clinton St.
As the oldest and most technologically broad STEM shadowing day program within the six-county Mohawk Valley region, the Project SITES team invites any science-based, math-based or engineering-based organization willing to participate in the program to volunteer as a host.
The Mohawk Valley Engineers Executive Council also invites the area’s schools and homeschool organizations, ranging from the Herkimer and Little Falls area to the Rome and Canastota areas, to register their seventh through 12th grade students.
The program is designed to help inspire future technologists and increase awareness of technology-based local careers.
Organizers hope students gain insight into their own preferences/dislikes, strengths/weaknesses, and their career passions, enriching the population of future technologists in the area and its industries.
Guest speakers will be announced soon and are usually local graduates who discuss how they moved forward from being Mohawk Valley students to become career professionals in different engineering careers. They talk about the lessons they’ve learned, the programs available to students to identify the paths to a career, and their current engineering work.
There is a plan for a live demo of an Unmanned Aircraft Systems flight, as well as displays and demonstrations by a CNY Drone League team and/or a Mohawk Valley robotics team. They are currently organizing other peer volunteer hosts involved with applied biology, medical research, smartphone security, hardware design, automated manufacturing and cyberwarfare.
