ROME — Jervis Public Library, 613 N. Washington St., will offer a special Friday evening session of its popular Unplug & Play tabletop game program on Friday, July 29 after regular hours of operation in the library’s Main Reading Room.

Doors will open for this special event at 5:45 p.m. and close at 6:15 p.m.

In addition to this special after hours event, the library holds monthly Unplug & Play sessions on the third Tuesday evening of each month. July’s meeting will take place on July 19 from 5-8 p.m. in the accessible auditorium.

“Our tabletop gaming programs provide an opportunity to ‘unplug’ from technology,” said Librarian Peter Chien, who has run the game program at the library since 2009. “Playing tabletop games provides an opportunity to interact with others face-to-face, something we don’t do as much in these days of video games and smartphones, and something that many couldn’t do during the pandemic.”

He said, “The library has been holding game nights for nearly 13 years and has amassed a diverse collection of more than 200 games for all ages, including over 100 games that are available for checkout. We hope folks will take this unique after-hours opportunity to check us out.”

Chien added that game night participants are also encouraged to bring games from their own collections to play.

For more information about Unplug and Play, visit the library’s website at www.jervislibrary.org and click on “Games,” near the bottom of the page. From there, visitors can see the schedule of game events, view a list of games in the collection, see what game is on display in the library for the month, and sign up to receive a monthly email newsletter about upcoming Unplug and Play meetings.
