SNAPSHOT: Rome firefighters gear up for ice water rescue training
Rome firefighters gear up for ice water rescue training on the Barge Canal in Rome Tuesday afternoon. The annual training involves both classroom work and hands-on sessions.

As part of ice water rescue training, Rome firefighters took their rescue sled out onto the frozen Barge Canal Tuesday afternoon. The training is an annual requirement from the state. As part of the exercise, the firefighters, clad in protective suits, brave the frigid waters of the canal to keep their skills sharp if an ice/water emergency rescue is needed.
