Six displaced due to unsafe conditions, fire in garage
UTICA — Six people have been displaced from their Utica home after a garage fire alerted city officials to unsafe living conditions, according to the Utica Fire Department.
Fire officials said a heavy fire was discovered at a detached garage at 1559 Seymour Ave. shortly after 5 p.m. Thursday. Responding firefighters used two hose lines to knock down the fire, while another crew kept the flames from spreading to a neighboring garage. The fire damage was contained to the garage and its contents. While firefighters doused hot spots and cleaned up the scene, they said they discovered major codes violations and unsafe issues throughout the building. National Grid was contacted to shut off gas and electricity to the building, which was marked unsafe.
Five adults and one child have been displaced from the home as a result, authorities said.
The cause of the fire remains under investigation. No one was injured, officials stated.
