EDITORIAL: Share the light of holiday season

A little light can go a long way — not just to brighten someone’s day, but also to brighten the lives of those facing illness.

A trio of local campaigns have done this for years — ringing in holiday cheer and providing much needed funds to help Rome Health, Oneida Health and Hospice and Palliative Care with their mission to provide care and comfort.

The Rome Twigs will host its annual Tree of Lights lighting ceremony on Sunday, Dec. 4, at the Rome Hospital green on North James Street. Members of Rome Twigs will begin gathering at 6:30 p.m., with the countdown for the tree lighting to begin at 7 p.m. The tree lighting is sponsored by Hubbard Tool & Die Company.

Between now and Wednesday, Nov. 30, you can help ensure success for the Tree of Lights campaign with a donation of $5 or more. All donations are tax-deductible with all monies going for the purchase of hospital equipment and to support programs of the hospital.

Last year’s Tree of Lights campaign raised more than $10,000. Donations can be addressed to Rome Memorial Hospital, Attention Tree of Lights, 1500 N. James St., Rome, N.Y. 13440. Checks should be made payable to Rome Twigs.

The Oneida Health Auxiliary is again celebrating the holiday season with its annual Light a Light campaign, a festive fundraising outreach to benefit patients and staff at both the hospital and its Extended Care Facility.

In the spirit of Thanksgiving, the auxiliary offers a heartfelt way to honor and show appreciation for a loved one or anyone who has brightened the donor’s life.

All honorees will be listed in the Light a Light Book of Honor on display in the ECF lobby as well as on a rolling electronic display in the hospital lobby. Lights on the tree in front of the hospital will represent the loved ones being remembered and honored.

Donations will directly benefit the patients of Oneida Health and residents of the Extended Care Facility.

Oneida Health department heads compose their own wish lists each January and the administration will send that list to the auxiliary to see what it would like to contribute toward each year. The auxiliary generally gives between $15,000 to $20,000 worth of items to the hospital and ECF annually.

The deadline for this year’s Light a Light campaign is Dec. 5. For more information on the Light a Light Campaign, including a donation form, or the auxiliary itself, call 315-361-2300, email or visit

Each holiday season, Hospice and Palliative Care’s end-of-the-year appeal and Light Up A Life Campaign invites the public to consider a gift to “Light Up A Life” to celebrate the lives of those who have been loved and lost and also recognize the Hospice, A.I.M. Palliative Care and Siegenthaler staff who have helped people along in their journeys.

The campaign gives the community the opportunity to honor a loved one with a tribute ornament which may be hung for all to see on the Hospice and A.I.M. Palliative Care tree or the Siegenthaler Center tree. Participants can also opt to place their holiday tag somewhere special to them, whether it be on a tree, in a window, or in another meaningful place at home.

People can make a donation online at Include the name(s) of those you would like to remember and be sure to select “Light Up A Life” as the donation type. Donations can also be mailed to “Light Up A Life” for Hospice, 4277 Middle Settlement Road, New Hartford, NY 13413, and there is also a bright red mailbox located outside the offices at 4277 Middle Settlement Road where donations can also be dropped off. All gifts to “Light Up A Life” are welcome through Dec. 31.

There is no better time, or season, to share a little light with others.
