Rome Twigs to honor hospital staff during Tree of Lights ceremony

The Rome Twigs will hold its annual Tree of Lights ceremony in front of the James Street entrance to Rome Memorial Hospital on Sunday, Dec. 6, at 7 p.m.

The Twigs will take a moment to remember, honor and celebrate loved ones, family and friends as the tree atop the hospital is illuminated. The lights will be switched on by Kevin and Christine Barry, and COVID-19 precautions will be observed at the outdoor ceremony.

Those who wish to watch the tree lighting can stay in their cars car or may also join the group at the hospital entrance. Those attending the outdoor ceremony are asked to wear a mask and maintain at least six-feet of distance from others.

This year the group honors all hospital workers for their dedication and service during these difficult times.

“We are acutely aware of the essential work they do to provide care for patients,” the Twigs said in a statement.

“They have had to take on the role of family when loved ones can not visit. They wear their masks and protective equipment all day long. They take additional precautions in order not to transfer the virus from work to home or vice versa.”

“The adjustments they have had to make have been challenging, but again and again they have done so with grace and with consideration of the patients and other staff at Rome Memorial
Hospital,” the announcement added.

“The Twigs express the gratitude of our community as we recognize and honor their efforts with the Tree of Lights this year.”

The Tree of Lights has been an annual fund-raiser for the volunteer organization since 1989. Barry Funeral Home has underwritten the expenses of the Tree of Lights campaign this year. The business’s $1,000 sponsorship makes it possible for the dollars from each light purchased to be used by Rome Twigs to buy hospital equipment and support services at the hospital.

Last year’s Tree of Lights campaign raised more than $10,000.

Individuals may purchase lights for $5 each to honor a living person, remember a deceased loved one, or express thanks; each light on the tree represents a gift of love and remembrance. Send donations for lights requested to: Rome Memorial Hospital, Attention Tree of Lights, 1500 N. James St., Rome, NY 13440. Make checks payable to Rome Twigs.
