ROME — Rome Chapter NAACP has planned several events throughout February in celebration of Black History Month.

At Strough Middle School, students, with the guidance of Student Support Specialist Grady Faulkner, have reconstructed the bus Rosa Parks was sitting in when she refused to give up her seat.

It will be displayed in the school gymnasium. Students will present information regarding the important turn in American History. Rome NAACP, along with the Afro-American Heritage Association of Rome, will also have exhibits on site.

Doors to Coach Stan “Buddy” Evans Gymnasium will be open from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m., and from 3-6 p.m. for the public to view the exhibit.

Rome NAACP will also partner with Jervis Public Library, 613 N. Washington St., to present Alien Tomato Party in conjunction with MVHS and Excellus BlueCross BlueShield. At Alien Tomato Party, there will be a reading of the book, “Alien Tomato,” by Kristen Schroeder. The event will also include a free salad lunch, where children can learn about healthy eating and make space and salad-themed crafts.

The event is scheduled to take place from 1-2 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 21 at the library’s fourth floor auditorium.

On Thursday, Feb. 23, at 11 a.m. Jervis Library will also host Black History Month Storytime with stories by Black authors, read by students from Rome Free Academy. Snacks will be provided, and blood pressure screenings will be performed. Heart health and vaccine information will also be provided.

At 5 p.m. Feb. 23, the celebration continues with the Capitol Theatre Health Fair and Free Family Movie Night, with the screening of the 1993 Disney film, Cool Runnings. There will be tables at the fair with information from sponsors. There will be a light meal provided, plus free popcorn and soda.

The event is sponsored by Mohawk Valley Health System, Excellus BlueCross BlueShield, Connected Community Schools, The Center of Utica, Jervis Library, Rite Aid and Capitol Theatre.
