Rochester man sentenced for homicide at Marcy Psych Center
MARCY — An inmate at the Central New York Psychiatric Center has been sentenced to five years in state prison for causing the death of a fellow inmate and for attacking a staff member, according to Oneida County Court officials.
Terance J. Blackman, 34, of Rochester, was sentenced by Oneida County Court Judge Michael L. Dwyer Monday to five years incarceration on a charge of second-degree assault, and two-to-four years incarceration on a charge of criminally negligent homicide, court officials said.
The sentences will run concurrently, with five years of post-release supervision.
Authorities said Blackman was in a fight with 37-year-old Anthony Diaz at the Marcy facility in November 2021 when he punched Diaz in the head. Troopers said the two men were fighting over a salt shaker. Diaz later died from his injuries at the hospital.
Blackman also attacked a staff member at the facility several days after the fight, authorities stated.
According to the state Department of Corrections, Blackman was serving a two-to-four year sentence on a charge of third-degree robbery. He entered the prison system in October 2021. According to media reports, Blackman had robbed three different banks in the Rochester area in June 2021.
