Richard Henry Harding, Jr. of Lee Center, 73, died at Syracuse Medical Center on February 15, 2021, after a brief illness. Born on January 8, 1948, in Schenectady, New York, he was the son of the late Richard Henry Harding, Sr. and Rita Mary McCrief Harding. He had resided in the Rome, New York, area for many years. He grew up in Latham, New York, and was a graduate of Shaker High School class of 1966. He also graduated from Cornell University class of 1970. After college, he served his country in the US Army as a Green Beret during the Vietnam era. He retired as an acting Prison Superintendent from the NYS Department of Correctional Services, where he had worked for over 30 years.
Rick is survived by his loving wife and companion Joann Allen, his four children Vincent (Gwen) Harding, Chett (Monika) Harding, Saira Harding and Sean Harding, four grandchildren, Devin Harding, Cierra Harding, John Wesley Harding and Maya Harding and two brothers Charles “Toby” Harding and Russell (Mary Berger) Harding, his stepson Kevin Harris and step-granddaughter Kylee Harris, and niece Jessica (John) Burmeister and nephew Andrew Harding.
Rick enjoyed hunting and fishing and collecting old coins and stamps. Honoring Rick’s wishes, he will be cremated, and his ashes will be spread at a waterfall in Huletts Landing, New York, where he spent many enjoyable summers as a child. A celebration of his life will be held after Covid-19 is under more control. In lieu of flowers, contributions in Rick’s memory can be made to St. Jude’s Children’s Hospital or a charity of your choice.
