Reported theft from unlocked vehicle leads to felony charge
ROME — A 22-year-old man is accused of stealing a laptop computer out of a car left running and unlocked at a Rome convenience store Saturday afternoon, according to the Rome Police Department.
Police said the victim left their vehicle running with the doors unlocked while they went into the Byrne Dairy on Erie Boulevard East around 2:30 p.m. Saturday. Police said Qasim Brown, 22, of Rome, then got into the vehicle and stole an expensive, Coach-brand bag that contained a Macbook laptop and other items.
The victim chased Brown for a short distance before returning to the store and calling 911. Police said Brown was later located at the nearby Relax Inn.
Brown is charged with one count of fourth-degree grand larceny, a class E felony, police said. He was released on an appearance ticket for Rome City Court.
