Remsen man found dead in Herkimer County lake
WEBB — The body of a 71-year-old Remsen man was found in Woodhull Lake in Herkimer County on Sunday, according to the Webb Police Department.
Police said a body was found floating near the Woodhull boat landing on Woodhull Lake at about 1:30 p.m.
Police and rescue personnel responded and the body was identified as 71-year-old Walter Kaczor, of Remsen, authorities stated.
Kaczor was pronounced dead at the scene and an autopsy has been scheduled.
Police said Kaczor owned a camp on the lake with water access, and he had been fishing near the dock Sunday morning.
Police said they believe Kaczor’s fishing line snagged a log and he fell into the water while trying to free his line. Police noted that Kaczor suffered from Parkinson’s Disease.
The Kaczor family posted a tribute to their late father on his Facebook page.
“Anyone who knows our father will appreciate the fact that his body was found still clutching his fishing pole,” the family wrote.
“Dad was a lifelong student, always thirsting for more knowledge about the universe and how/why it worked. If there’s one thing I can say for sure, he knows every one of those answers now. Positive thoughts are welcomed, but in honor of our father and friend, we ask that you continue to live your lives with the deepest love and respect for one another, nature and the universe like Walt himself did.”
Funeral arrangements have not yet been set, the family wrote.
The incident remains under investigation.
