ILION — The former union financial secretary at Remington Arms in Herkimer County admitted in Federal Court on Wednesday to embezzling more than $38,000 in union funds, according to the U.S. Attorney's Office.

Jay Garnsey, 38, of Richfield Springs, Otsego County, pleaded guilty in Federal Court on Wednesday to one count of embezzlement of labor union assets, court officials said. Garnsey faces a maximum of five years in prison and a $250,000 fine when he returns for sentencing before Judge David N. Hurd in Utica on Jan. 25.

Garnsey has also agreed to pay $38,172.76 in restitution.

Prosecutors said Garnsey worked at Remington Arms in Ilion from late 2015 through December 2019, while also serving as financial secretary of the employee union. Garnsey admitted in court that he embezzled more than $38,000 from the union by, among other things, submitting fraudulent reimbursement vouchers.
