Police: Woman should have kept paws off dog outside store

A 33-year-old woman is accused of stealing a dog she found tied up outside the Dollar General in Rome, according to law enforcement officials.

Police said a Rome man took his dog for a walk to the Dollar General on Black River Boulevard at about 5:30 p.m. June 9. Police said the man left the dog tied up outside the store while he went shopping. When the man came back out, the dog was gone.

Police said a witness in the area told the man that two women had taken the dog and had driven off.

Police said they were able to locate the women due to their work uniforms and the dog was recovered. Police said the case against Amber L. Wilcox, of Oneida, was turned over to Rome City Court and a criminal summons was issued on a charge of petty larceny.

According to police, Wilcox said she thought the dog had been abandoned.

Wilcox answered the summons on Wednesday, authorities stated. She is scheduled to reappear in court. The second woman was not charged.
