Police seize pot, ‘ghost gun’

COLUMBIA — Two pounds of marijuana and a loaded handgun were seized during a traffic stop in Herkimer County earlier this month.

State police said they pulled over Justin P. Murray, 30, of Whitesboro, on Elizabethtown Road in Columbia on Feb. 18. Troopers said they found a loaded semi-automatic 9mm handgun with a 17-round magazine.

Troopers called the weapon a “ghost gun,”which is a homemade or improvised firearm, often built from existing gun parts.

Two pounds of marijuana, a quantity of cocaine and pieces of drug paraphernalia were also found in the vehicle, troopers said. Murray is charged with one count each of second and third-degree possession of a weapon, second-degree possession of marijuana, all felonies, as well as seventh-degree possession of a controlled substance and three counts of criminal use of drug paraphernalia.

Murray was arraigned in court and was sent to county jail in lieu of $20,000 cash bail or $40,000 bond. He is scheduled to reappear in court.
