Police seek suspect in shooting outside convenience store


One man was shot in the leg outside the Byrne Dairy on Erie Boulevard East late Wednesday night.

The search is on for the shooter. Police said he is a white male who was familiar with the victim.

"It was not a random shooting," said Rome Police spokesperson Lt. Sharon Rood. "The public is not in danger."

Police said the shooting occurred at about 10 p.m. at the Canal Street entrance to the Byrne Dairy convenience store. Police said the victim was shot once in the leg by a handgun, and the shooter then got into a motor vehicle and fled the scene.

The victim's identity has not been released. Police said he was treated at a local hospital for a non-life threatening injury.

Rood said the motivation for the shooting remains under investigation.
