VERONA BEACH — The Parkway Center has announced the opening of its second location in Verona Beach.
The Center will open its Fitness Center located at 6734 Route 13 on May 17 by appointment only during temporary hours of 8 a.m. to 6 p.m., Monday through Friday.
The Center will be open for in-person programming starting June 1.
Parkway Center officials said they have been serving seniors in Oneida and Herkimer Counties for over 60 years through its mission of providing programs and services to individuals over 50, empowering them to live healthy and vibrant lives.
The Parkway Center has been working with residents in the Verona Beach-Sylvan Beach area since 2009, when the area senior center closed.
In 2012, the Parkway Center partnered with Oneida Housing Authority, which purchased a former elementary school to formulate a vision to provide sustainable opportunities for seniors otherwise lacking in the rural areas of Oneida County and the Mohawk Valley - new quality affordable housing, senior services, and programming intended to support healthy, active living.
The residential apartments are fully occupied, but the senior center has been waiting since May of 2020 to open due to the health pandemic.
With the recommendations and guidelines from the Oneida County Health Department and CDC, the new location’s fitness center will open May 17 and in-person programming will start June 1 with temporary hours and guidelines that will be in place to ensure the health and safety of all those using the facility.
Kelly Walters, Executive Director of the Parkway Center said she is excited to finally open up the Center’s second location in Verona Beach.
“It has been a long year in waiting to be able to open our new location, but we are excited to give area residents 50 and up a place to go for programming and activities, as well as a state of the art fitness center that will be open to anyone over the age 18.”
“This is very good news for our Township and our surrounding region,” said Scott Musacchio, Verona town supervisor. “This will bring a much-needed resource to our community, and I want to thank everyone involved at the Parkway Center and the Oneida Housing Authority for their hard work on this project.”
Anyone wishing to obtain a membership or schedule an appointment can call the Parkway Center at the Beach at 315-235-2029 between the hours of 8:30 a.m. and 4 p.m.
