Pair of new cell sites in area part of AT&T wireless broadband effort
CAMDEN — Some area AT&T wireless customers may have noticed a boosts in network speeds as part of the company’s wireless broadband expansion effort in Oneida and Herkimer counties.
According to a company announcement on Tuesday, new cell sites in Camden as well as the Herkimer County town of Cold Brook will help give AT&T customers better access to mobile internet.
“AT&T customers and FirstNet subscribers in Central New York got a big boost in wireless connectivity and mobile broadband,” the company said Tuesday, announcing the addition of new cell sites in Cicero and Tully in Onondaga County as well as the two local sites. The additions will “help give residents, visitors, businesses and first responders faster, more reliable wireless service.”
The enhancements, the AT&T announcement said, also brings Band 14 spectrum to the area. Band 14 is nationwide, high-quality spectrum set aside by the government specifically for FirstNet. “We look at Band 14 as public safety’s VIP lane. In an emergency, this band – or lane – can be cleared and locked just for FirstNet subscribers. When not in use by FirstNet subscribers, AT&T customers can enjoy Band 14’s added coverage and capacity,” the announcement said.
From 2019 to 2021, the company said it has invested more than $1.6 billion in its wireless and wireline networks in New York.
“At AT&T, we’re continuing to invest in our mobile broadband network in counties and communities across the state to make connections easier for residents, visitors, businesses and first responders throughout New York,” said John Emra, president, AT&T Atlantic Region. “These investments add to the quality of life, commercial vitality, public safety, innovative spirit and economic competitiveness across the Empire State.”
