CLIFTON PARK — A pair of local drivers have been named finalists for the New York State 2020 Driver of the Year Award by the Trucking Association of New York (TANY) Safety Council during a ceremony on Tuesday, Sept.21.

Five finalists of TANY’s Driver of the Year Award are recognized each year with one driver selected as the overall statewide winner.

All award recipients receive cash prizes and a plaque acknowledging their achievement. The award recognizes truck drivers who demonstrate a dedication to their profession and loyalty to their employers.

Consideration for the award is given to those with outstanding driving records and who display professionalism both on and off the road. Winners are often very involved in their communities, typically through safety education, civic engagement or charitable pursuits, according to the announcement by TANY officials.

The two local drivers nominated for the TANY Driver of the Year are:

• Gerald Savoy, of Vernon, a professional truck driver for Walmart Supply Chain. Savoy was recognized for his outstanding safety achievements, dedication to his job performance, contributing to the success of his company’s safety record, and for contributing towards the betterment of the trucking industry and his community, according to the TANY announcement.

“He has been safely driving for 39 years, 27 of which have been with Walmart Supply Chain, and has driven nearly 4 million accident-free miles during his career. Gerald has received multiple safe driving awards in recognition of his continued safe driving history,” the announcement said.

“He most recently received a Driver of the Quarter award in 2020. Gerald works closely with the younger generation of drivers assisting them to be the safest drivers on the road. He participates in the Make-A-Wish yearly golf tournament and the Victory Junction Gang. Outside of driving he enjoys camping, hunting, golfing and working around the house,” the announcement said.

• Timothy Burnett, of Whitesboro, also a professional truck driver for Walmart Supply Chain. Burnett was recognized for his outstanding safety achievements, dedication to his job performance, contributing to the success of his company’s safety record, and for contributing towards the betterment of the trucking industry and his community.

“He has been safely driving for 33 years, nearly 28 of which have been with Walmart Supply Chain, and has driven over 3 million safe miles during his career,” the announcement said.

“Tim was previously awarded the TANY Central Region Driver of the Year Award in 2004 and won the Statewide Driver of the Year award in 2016. He is a frequent competitor at the local, state and national truck driving championships,” the announcement added.

According to TANY officials, “Tim is one of only 121 drivers companywide that has accumulated 3 million safe miles. Outside of driving, Tim is active in his church, and volunteers for several charities including Make-a-Wish, Relay for Life, the Heart Walk and Walk for Dyslexia,”

The Trucking Association of New York is a non-profit trade association representing the interests of the motor truck industry.

With over 580 member companies, the association is one of the top trucking associations in the country and is the sole New York affiliate of the American Trucking Associations, the announcement said.
