Pack Your Pantry Resource Fair provides food, and help, to hundreds

On Tuesday, Aug. 17, the Connected Community Team welcomed the start of the new school year with a community wide Pack Your Pantry Resource Fair, open to all, held in the side parking lot of Staley Elementary in the Rome City School District.

With school right around the corner and a team of new site coordinators, the Connected Community Schools initiative wanted to pull the crew together for a community-wide event. Dubbed the Pack Your Pantry Resource Fair, attendees from the community were able to “pack their pantry” with items from its Resource HUB (including canned vegetables and fruits, canned meats, chili, and soups, nuts, trail mix, cornmeal, packaged baked goods, various snacks, powdered milk, pasta, rice, macaroni and cheese, peanut butter and jelly, wipes, hand sanitizer, and hand soap, and other items). They were also able to walk through tables of resource and service organizations to meet, explore, and connect with services on the spot.

Represented were agencies and programs, including Central New York Health Home Network, First Source Federal Credit Union, YWCA, First Student Bus Company, MVP Health Care, Upstate Cerebral Palsy, ACR Health, Safe Schools Mohawk Valley, Care Net, Mohawk Valley Community Action Agency, Inc., Community Health and Behavioral Services, YWCA Mohawk Valley, Helio Health, Center For Family Life and Recovery, Inc., and Resource Center for Independent Living.

The CCS crew served some 70 families, amounting to 239 individuals. People came to us from Rome, Lee Center, Taberg as well as Camden and New York Mills.
