Owner of Back Roads Tavern accused of tax fraud

CANASTOTA — The owner and proprietor of the Back Roads Tavern in Madison County is accused of not paying more than $68,000 in taxes, according to the Madison County Sheriff's Office.

Authorities said Douglas R. Case, 49, of Oneida, owns Back Roads Tavern on Canal Road in Canastota, and he failed to file or pay sales tax for the business between June 2017 and February 2020. Further, Case allegedly failed to pay more than $68,000 in taxes.

Following an investigation, Case was taken into custody on Tuesday. Case is charged with second-degree grand larceny, a class C felony; and third-degree tax fraud, a class D felony, authorities said. He was arraigned in Lenox Town Court and was released on his own recognizance. He is scheduled to reappear in court.
