Oneida school district counselors reach out after death of soccer coach
ONEIDA — Oneida City School District Superintendent of Schools Matthew T. Carpenter said the passing of longtime and much-loved soccer coach Dale McCormick during mid-winter break has been a tough time for the district.
McCormick drowned Feb. 19 while on vacation with his family in Florida, attempting to save his own children from the undertow while swimming in the ocean.
Carpenter said the district’s counseling and administration team met Sunday evening to put a plan in place.
“Our counselors have cleared their schedules across the district and will be available to any students or staff who need support,” Carpenter said. “Additionally, they worked to identify the students who were coached by Dale and the students who are known to be close with his children.”
“Our staff was on hand today and last week to help if need be,” added high school Principal Brian Gallagher. “Very tragic for his family and our thoughts are with them.”
Currently, they have not made arrangements for a memorial service.
“We want to get through these first few days and then work with the family on plans,” Carpenter said.
