GERMAN FLATTS — One person was killed when their SUV crashed off state Route 5S in Herkimer County Monday night and burst into flames, according to the New York State Police.

The identity of the driver has not yet been released pending an autopsy.

Troopers said the driver was eastbound on Route 5S shortly before 8 p.m. when it appears that they suffered a medical issue. Troopers said their 2018 Toyota Rav4 crossed into the oncoming lane of traffic and sideswiped a westbound 2014 Jeep Cherokee, driven by Steven A. Robellard, 70, of Mohawk.

The Toyota then bounced between the guardrails on both the north and south shoulders before becoming engulfed in flames, with the driver trapped inside, troopers said. The driver was pronounced dead at the scene and an autopsy is scheduled.

Robellard and his two passengers were not injured, troopers said.

The crash remains under investigation.
