One displaced in early morning Westmoreland fire

WESTMORELAND — One man is displaced after an early morning fire on Stone Road in Westmoreland, according to the Westmoreland Fire Department.

Fire Chief Jeff Grube said "a neighbor across the street saw it, and the resident woke up smelling smoke" shortly before 2 a.m. Tuesday at 7568 Stone Road. The chief said the resident escaped the home without injury and the alarm was raised to 911.

Stone Road runs east off East Main Street from the village.

"There was heavy fire on the back side of the residence" when firefighters arrived on scene, Grube stated. Volunteers from nine departments were dispatched to the fire.

"We made an interior attack and knocked it down," the chief stated.

Grube called the fire "stubborn" because the two-story home was an old farmhouse with a metal roof, and the fire "got in between the roof layers". He said it took nearly 2 1/2 hours before the fire was declared under control.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation, the chief said. The home was heavily damaged, and the chief said the owner has insurance.

No firefighters were injured.

The Westmoreland, Clark Mills, Clinton, Vernon, Vernon Center, Oriskany, New York Mills, Stanwix Heights and Whitesboro fire departments responded to the scene.
