UTICA — One man is dead and another is in custody following an assault on Eagle Street in Utica very early Wednesday morning, according to the Utica Police Department.

The identities of those involved were not released by Wednesday evening. Police said charges were expected to be filed against the suspect Wednesday night.

At about 3 a.m. Wednesday, police said a man walked up to the fire station on Park Avenue and claimed there was an unresponsive man on his porch in the 100 block of Eagle Street that needed immediate medial attention. Police and fire officials responded to the scene and found the victim with obvious injuries to his face and hands.

Rescue personnel attempted life saving procedures but they were in vain, police noted. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

While officers were investigating, police said the resident returned home and became belligerent with the officers. Police said the resident attempted to interfere and tamper with evidence.

The man was detained, and police said he attempted to fight back against the officers. He was taken into custody after a brief struggle.

Over the course of the investigation, with the evidence collected, police said they believe the resident was responsible for the victim's death.

An autopsy has been scheduled to determine the exact cause of death.

Police said the identity of the victim will be released once next of kin are notified. The identity of the suspect will be released once charges have been filed, police stated.

Anyone with information on the attack is asked to call the Major Crimes Unit at 315-223-3556. Anonymous tips can be sent to the website www.MohawkValleyCrimeStoppers.com or by calling Crime Stoppers at 1-866-730-8477.

This is the second homicide in Utica so far this year, and the fourth homicide within a two month period in the city.
