Olde Kountry Market has old-fashioned commitment to quality

VERNON — “Honest customer service” was the top priority of Olde Kountry Market during 2022, and now that dedication to service continues moving into 2023, said Regina Stoltzfus, who owns the store with husband Myron Stoltzfus.

“I like when our customers are happy,” Regina said of her favorite part of the business.

Olde Country Market opened in November 2003. Living up to their name, they have always offered an old world-flare and their old-fashioned commitment to quality and customer satisfaction is obvious throughout the store.

Online reviews laud their deli cold cuts; homemade baked goods like breads and fruit pies, cheesecakes and cream-filled whoopie pies; fruits and vegetables; cheeses; jams and jellies; egg, potato and chicken salads and the plentiful candy selection; as well as the courteous staff, the cleanliness of the store and their reasonable prices.

They also sell eggs, Stoltzfus Dairy milk and yogurt, hot dogs, bulk pepperoni, mozzarella cheese, soft drinks, salty snacks and much more, plus homemade craft items, religious keepsakes and outdoor storage sheds.

For people who like to prepare their own food, they sell yeast, flour, spices and other baking and cooking needs. There are numerous cookie-making ingredients and even kits that include all of those ingredients all in one convenient place.

They buy in bulk and then repackage items into smaller quantities, so that helps keep their prices down. Much of their inventory was produced locally or at least in New York State, Regina said.

In 2022, two of their biggest concerns were finding enough products to fill the shelves and finding enough help - echoing food retailers throughout the area. But there were also times when they could get items the bigger supermarkets were not able to as well, Regina said.

Product shortages also led them to be creative, Myron added.

“We were constantly seeing product shortages but then we would try to replace them by trying new things,” he said.

Regina said they are always looking to hire people who want to work - noting it can be a hard job but it is a rewarding one at the same time.

“I like the work and I especially like being able to work with my children here,” Regina said, noting she and Myron have four kids who can come to the store with them. “We find little jobs for the kids to do.”

Olde County Market is located at 6505 Route 5 just east of the village of Vernon and open from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday; 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Thursday and Friday; and 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday. They are closed Sunday.
