OHM BOCES students place at SkillsUSA Regional Competition

MORRISVILLE — Fourteen Oneida-Herkimer-Madison BOCES students received recognition at this year’s SkillsUSA Area 2 Regional Competition Feb. 10 at SUNY Morrisville.

Competitors demonstrated their talents in a variety of areas including criminal justice, carpentry, TV production and advertising and design.

Junior Tessa Nash from Whitesboro and seniors Brandon Neary from New Hartford and Dalton Stirling from Holland Patent placed first in the Crime Scene Investigation team event. Individual first place winners included seniors Mason Palmer from New York Mills in Criminal Justice and Gleb Samoshuk from Clinton in Carpentry.

Seniors Carter McGregor, Ella McGregor, Marlee Schafer, Tessie Schafer and Allison Storey from Westmoreland placed second in the Quiz Bowl team event. Individual second place winners included seniors Audra Brannum from New York Mills and Cecelia Canestrari from Whitesboro, both in TV Production.

Individual third place winners included seniors Nay Aung Linn from Whitesboro in Related Technical Math and Veronica Randel-Spells from Whitesboro in Advertising and Design.

“The SkillsUSA competition allows our students to not only demonstrate their knowledge and competency but also provides them opportunities to collaborate with business and industry partners and network with peers across the region,” said David Stayton, principal of the Career and Technical Education Center. “The regional competition prepares students for the state competition in Syracuse, which will be held in April.”

The OHM BOCES serves the component school districts of Brookfield, Clinton, Holland Patent, New Hartford, New York Mills, Oriskany, Remsen, Sauquoit Valley, Utica, Waterville, Westmoreland and Whitesboro.
