UPDATE: Abandoned dog found safe in sub-zero temperatures

MOHAWK — A dog abandoned after-hours in the parking lot of the Herkimer County Humane Society on Route 5S has been found alive, after surviving overnight in sub-zero temperatures, society officials said.
The abandonment was captured on security cameras and officials said they are looking for information on the suspect.
"They basically dumped a dog off," said Robert Schrader, president of the humane society. "It wasn't just a stray dog. Someone had brought it down to the parking lot and deliberately dropped it off."
Abandoning a dog is illegal in New York State.
According to Schrader, security cameras captured a vehicle pulling into the parking lot after dark, at about 5:30 p.m., and then letting out what appears to be a pit bull or pit bull mix breed of dog. The vehicle then left the lot and the dog behind. The humane society closes at 5 p.m. and the volunteers go home.
The dog almost immediately ran out into Route 5S and was clipped by a passing vehicle, possibly injuring the animal, Schrader stated.
Attempts were made to catch the dog after someone in the area called 911, but they were unsuccessful Thursday night. Humane society volunteers returned to search for the dog Friday morning and the animal was found by 1 p.m. Friday.
Temperatures dipped down to the single digits and even below freezing between Thursday night and all through Friday. The dog was brought into the humane society for treatment.
Schrader said he will be contacting the New York State Police to investigate the abandonment. The suspect is believed to have been driving a Kia Soul or other box-shaped sedan.
Schrader said there is a proper process to follow to surrender your animal. There is a surrender fee, but he said it is "minuscule," and goes to help the animals at the shelter.
Anyone who recognizes the vehicle or has information about the abandonment is asked to contact the Humane Society at 315-866-3255.
