No foul play suspected in fatal fire

TOWN OF STEUBEN — Two people are dead following a house fire on Fraser Road in Steuben very early Monday morning.

Trenton Joint Fire District Chief Kevin Kalk said the alarm was raised at 1:06 a.m. for the fire at 9201 Fraser Road, which runs between Soule Road and Route 274.

The chief said a neighbor was just returning home when they discovered the fire.

“It was fully involved when the called discovered it,” Kalk said, and had likely been burning for some time.

Volunteers from seven area departments responded to the scene and set up multiple hose lines for the fully involved fire. Kalk said the condition of the home was rapidly deteriorating, so crews launched an exterior attack until the bulk of the fire was knocked down. Multiple mutual aid departments assisted in tankering water to the scene.

Once the fire was out, crews entered the home and found two people dead, officials said. Their identities have not yet been released. They are believed to be the only residents.

Multiple family pets were also killed in the fire, the chief said.

Crews remained on the scene dousing hot spots and cleaning up until noon on Monday, then returned for a rekindle shortly after 6 p.m. No firefighters were hurt.

The state police and the state Office of Fire Prevention and Control are investigating the cause of the fire, according to local fire officials.

“No foul play is suspected,” Chief Kalk said. The Holland Patent, Barneveld, Stittville, Floyd, Remsen, Poland and Western fire departments responded.
