NEW YORK MILLS — The village of New York Mills has been in existence since 1922 — and this year it will celebrate a milestone of 100 years as a community of rich heritage and a place where, officials say, today’s modern opportunities meet yesterday’s traditions.

Mayor Ernie Talerico and the New York Mills Centennial Committee say they are proud to have put together a full slate of activities and are grateful that the village remains a great place to live, work and play.

“I’m so honored and privileged to be able to serve in the centennial year of the village, 100 years is a great milestone,” said Talerico. “It’s important that we continue the traditions of New York Mills. We’ve had very hard working individuals who were the initial start of the village and who took a lot of pride and carried the tradition throughout the 100 years, so we want to continue that.”

On Saturday, July 9, in conjunction with the village-wide garage sales, there will crafters showcasing their talents, starting at 10 a.m. at Pulaski Park. There will also be an open house at the New York Mills Historical Society, 96 Main St., from noon to 3 p.m.

From 5 p.m. to dusk, Pulaski Park will be abuzz with food trucks, the Utica ZooMobile and other family activities. There will be a short program honoring the village for its 100 years, where Oneida County Executive Anthony J. Picente Jr. will be the keynote speaker. Music will be performed by The Reuben James Band, Nick Vanderwood and DJ Ryan Rys. Those who plan to attend are encouraged to bring a lawn chair to sit, relax and celebrate.

Fireworks will end the night of pride and celebration for the village of New York Mills.

In addition to the celebration, Talerico and the Centennial Committee have been working on establishing a Centennial Park in partnership with Oneida County Main Streets program. The park will be located across the street from the Fire Department with plans for it to commemorate the milestone.

“We have a great community that is rich in history, and we really appreciate all of our community support that we have from the different municipalities, cities and towns,” Talerico added. “We’re just so grateful for all of the collaboration that we have. As a small village, you need the collaboration of everybody to be successful. We’re very appreciative of everyone’s collaborative efforts to be successful.”
