New Hartford stops staffing crossing guard by St. John the Evangelist Nursery School
NEW HARTFORD — The Town of New Hartford is no longer employing a crossing guard in front of St. John the Evangelist Nursery School.
At a Wednesday, Jan. 18 town board meeting, Ronald Fontaine, New Hartford police chief, said that the town has been short a crossing guard at that location, so police officers have been manning the crosswalk.
“While doing so, we realized there was almost no activity there that required our intervention,” Fontaine said. “The lieutenant met with Cristin Heselton, the director, and they’re willing to take responsibility for the limited amount of crossing that is involved with the students going into the preschool program, which almost exclusively were crossed by parents anyway.”
The board accepted correspondence from the nursery school, in which the nursery school accepted the responsibility for that crosswalk on Sherman Street.
