Neighborhood cafe serves up coffee, community and creativity

UTICA — From the eclectic decor to the overall welcoming atmosphere, Tramontane Cafe provides their customers with more than what a typical coffeehouse does.

The cafe, affectionately known as “the Tram,” is located on 1105 Lincoln Ave., adjacent to Bargain Grocer and just steps away from downtown.

At first glance, the kitschy trinkets and furniture that adorn the Tram might remind patrons of coffeehouses one might see in New York City.

Upon reviewing the menu, patrons will find what is to be expected from a cafe, a variety of options for coffee and other caffeinated drinks, as well as options for both lunch and dinner.

Aside from the Tram’s menu and the unique character of the establishment, there’s still more to be offered that keeps bringing patrons in.

“We are a soup, salad, sandwich house, or coffee house cafe, but we’re also a community venue,” said Robin Raabe, owner of Tramontane Cafe. “We like being here for folks. We just started back up doing a lot of our events.”

The community venue aspect is what separates The Tram from other locally-owned cafes. The Tram hosts a multitude of events, ranging from spoken word poetry, to comedy shows and drag shows, providing an open and accepting environment for people of all ages.

The Tram first opened in 2008 and served patrons for 10 years, up until June 2018, when the owners decided to temporarily close the establishment to take a break. Their break ended up becoming extended due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The Tram opened their doors once again to the community in June 2022.

Since it’s reopening, customers both old and new will find that the Tram continues to provide exactly what they have been doing for over 10 years, serving up food, beverages, and a welcoming environment. Adapting with the times, there will always be some slight changes and additions, including special themed menus for events and a recent addition of zero-proof non-alcoholic beverages.

“I appreciate that everyone that comes to the Tram finds something they appreciate, whether it’s food or drink or atmosphere or the welcomingness of all of our staff and folks,” Raabe said. “It’s very important to us that no matter who you are and what you bring to our world, we are here for you.”

The Tramontane Cafe is open Wednesday and Thursday from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m., Friday and Saturday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. and closed on Sunday and Monday.
