MVCC, Little Falls City School District to partner on STEAM program

Mohawk Valley Community College and the Little Falls School District will co-develop project-based science, technology, engineering, arts and math (STEAM) curricula for implementation in the Mohawk Valley school district’s K-8 Engineering by Design program. Through this partnership, Little Falls elementary school students will use MVCC’s FABLab’s industry-grade 3D printers to develop solutions to real-life problems through the additive manufacturing of products in numerous materials including plastic, onyx, rubber, and metal, according to an announcement by Little Falls School District officials.

MVCC has developed innovative approaches to teaching coding to beginners, including programming mBots to navigate mazes and perform dance moves, the announcement said, adding the MVCC faculty are happy to visit to teach a coding “lesson,” share instruction techniques with teachers, and leave a few mBots with the school for student and teacher experimentation, the announcement said.

MVCC has a dedicated (and fun) group of faculty that serve on our WISE (Women in Science and Engineering) team, the announcement said, adding they would be happy to visit either in-person or virtually to meet or hold an activity that helps promote the cause of encouraging girls to embrace the sciences.

In addition to the programming at Little Falls, the announcement added that MVCC’s GenCyber cybersecurity summer camps are free (funded by the National Security Agency), week-long camps for 9-12 students interested in learning about cybersecurity from the basics of building a computer from scratch to networking and coding. A beginner camp will run from July 11-15, followed by a more advanced camp July 18-22.
