Matt’s brews a positive future

Once again F.X. Matt Brewery has showcased its talents to look into the future for new products that can contribute to growth in the 4th generation, family-owned Utica company.

On Wednesday, F.X. Matt Brewery President Fred Matt welcomed the news media into the plant to announce the company is concluding some major expansions and at the same time making plans for more progress — all during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Matt said the brewery has finished a $34.7 million brewhouse and tank farm expansion, with plans for another $11 million in brewery investments. “The recent expansion includes a new state-of-the-art brewhouse and tank farm, doubling brewing capacity from 5-6 brews per day to 10-12 brews per day and adding fermenting/aging capacity, resulting in greater flexibility and better quality control,” the company said.

Another factor in this success story is the 30-year partnership between Brooklyn Brewery and F.X. Matt that creates jobs. To help fund the investments, F.X. Matt sold a 20% interest to its long-time downstate brewing partner.

The F.X. Matt Brewery’s main product lines include Saranac, Saranac Soft Drinks and Utica Club; but in recent year Matt’s has expanded its capabilities to a wide range of beverages including distilled spirits, wine, energy drinks and “good for you” beverages, in addition to beer and soft drinks.

Matt told those present that he can foresee more products and more jobs in the brewery. “We’ve been in business for 130 years. We hope to be in business 100 more years,” Matt said. “We make wonderful beverages.”
