Mary (Schipano) DeBonzo

Mary DeBonzo, 86, of Westernville, NY, formerly of Mobile, AL, passed away at Rome Health on December 3, 2021, surrounded by the comfort of her daughters.

She was born in Rome, NY, on March 12, 1935, the youngest of 12 of the late Louis and Antoinette Condella Schipano. On January 18, 1954, she married the love of her life, the late Anthony DeBonzo, Jr. She retired from Mary Psychiatric Center after 35 years of service.

Despite losing her husband in the prime of her life, Mary was always cheerful, singing, and keeping a positive outlook. She relied on God’s grace to see her through the tough times. Mary looked forward to her daily phone calls with her sister, Palma. Her love of animals was second to none. There wasn’t a stray she didn’t take under her wing and care for.

She is survived by her sister, Palma Ciotti; children, Mary Amick, Tony DeBonzo, Ann Marie Crescenzi, Carmella Mertz, Suzanne Streifert, Michelle Parrott and their families. She also leaves behind 13 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren.

The family would like to thank Dr. Todd Podkowka, nurses Jessie, Haley, Janet and Jessica P. They’d also like to acknowledge Allisha for her loving care towards Mary. The family would also like to thank Mary’s former daughter-in-law, Jackie Maggio, for all of her help, care and compassion given to Mary during her final days. Also, thanks to the staff at Rome Health.

A Mass of Christian will be held on December 9, 2021, at 11 a.m. at the Church of St. John the Baptist, with the Rev. Paul F. Angelicchio officiating. Burial will be in St. John’s Cemetery.
