Mary Pekola Draper, 103, passed away on Friday, July 16, 2021, at the Calvert County Nursing Facility in Port Republic, Maryland, where she was a resident since January 2021. Born on June 12, 1918, in Bayonne, N.J., to the late Walter and Frances (Sordyl) Pekola, she was raised in Verona, N.Y., and attended Verona schools.
Mary was predeceased by her husband, Earl Draper, in March 1948. She is survived by her son, Donald, of Port Republic, MD, with whom she had resided, and a daughter, Nancy Strong, of Ann Arbor, MI; seven grandchildren, Todd Pekola, Tanya Pekola Charles, Terrence Pekola, Kristin Draper Wylie, Kelley Draper Rhinehart, Eric Strong and Tara Strong; great-grandchildren, Nicholas Pekola, Nathaniel Pekola, Trinity Charles, Melyssa Strong, Mykaela Strong, MyKenzie Strong, Madyson Strong, Dereck Strong, Zach Draper and Lauren Wylie; as well as many nephews and nieces. She was also predeceased by a son, Vincent Pekola; one sister, Frances Murphy; and five brothers, Stephen, Edward, Chester, Joseph and Henry Pekola.
At the request of the family, there will be no calling hours. Arrangements will be through the Sewell Funeral Home of Port Republic, MD. A memorial service will be held at a later date.
