Manslaughter case headed to grand jury
UTICA — A Utica man charged with manslaughter for the death of another man on Eagle Street will have his case presented to a grand jury for a possible indictment, according to Utica City Court officials.
Matthew Johnston, 50, appeared before City Court Judge Joseph Saba for a felony hearing on Friday on one count of first-degree manslaughter. Following the hearing, his case was forwarded to the county level. An indictment is expected sometime in the next 45 days, officials said.
Police said Johnston attacked another man on Johnston’s porch on Eagle Street at around 3 a.m. Jan. 11, causing the man’s death. Police said Johnston notified the authorities about the unresponsive man on his porch, and then tried to interfere when investigators started looking into the death. The identity of the victim has not yet been released.
