WOODGATE — A man escaped serious injury from a blaze that destroyed his two-story home on Ager Lane Tuesday evening.

Otter Lake Fire Chief Scott Eisenhart said his department received the alarm for 135 Ager Lane at about 6:20 p.m., which is located “in eye shot” of the volunteer fire station. The homeowner was able to escape the fire and contact 911, the chief said.

On arrival, Eisenhart said the structure was fully involved. Due to the location off the road, firefighters trekked hand-lines through the deep snow to initiate an exterior attack.

Tankers were needed to supply water, and mutual aid was requested from Woodgate, Stittville, Forestport and Remsen volunteer companies. Boonville Fire Department was placed on stand-by at their station, the chief said, and Old Forge Ambulance responded to the scene to transport the resident to a local hospital for treatment.

Eisenhart said at least 30 volunteers responded to the scene.

Firefighters battled the blaze through the night. A neighboring camp was also damaged from exposure.

“We had some exposure that caused partial damage to another neighboring home,” Eisenhart said. “It was moderate smoke and fire damage.”

After flames were knocked down and under control, the chief said he called his department back into service at around 5 a.m. Wednesday. A rekindle was reported at the property about two hours later, he said.

The house has been deemed a total loss. Members of the state Fire Inspection and Investigation Branch were at the scene Wednesday investigating the cause and origin of the blaze.
